It's Henna Time Again! Spirit Vision Henna is back at The Midnight Sun

Do you love henna tattoo? Have you been waiting all winter long for the weather to break? Well, the wait is over.

I am happy to say I just made up a very lovely paste, letting it rest in the sun so that the dye would happily release from the mix of henna powder, henna tea & lemon juice.

Essential oils and some tamarind were added, the paste rested another day in balmy sunshine, and I now have a cone of henna to give deep stains on the hands and feet.

For those new to henna, it is a heat-activated body dye, and thus we wait for the warmer weather. The longer you leave your henna paste on the skin, and the warmer the weather, the darker your finished color will be.

I use quality henna powder from reliable suppliers, and the finest essential oils... but you must come prepared as well. Please do not come for henna wearing lotion or sun screen as this will prevent the dye from staining your skin a deep color.

I am hoping you will leave the paste on your skin for at least three hours, so if you want henna on your feet... wear the tiniest flip flops possible. ( Some want to brave 5 Points bare foot, but I don't think this is the best idea. )

Henna tattoo designs start at $15 and go up from there. I bring a good selection of pattern books, and you are welcome to look through the many images posted on this blog, or on my henna site.

I have been doing henna tattoo for over ten years now, all henna is free hand, and I am happy to create a unique design that fits your style and your budget. It is best to call ahead for henna if you want a tattoo during the week. I am not always available on short notice, so best to plan ahead.

I will be offering henna tattoo at The Midnight Sun, 1055 Park Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32205 this Saturday, most probably between 1 and 4 PM. Please call 904-993-7466 for more information if need be.

Tribal Henna Patterns for Men

Here is an example of a freehand tribal style henna tattoo. Bold tribal henna is a good choice for men who want the experience of henna tattoo.

This design, while seeming very geometric, also has components found in traditional African patterns.

Henna always gives the darkest color on the palms of the hands. This is because of the nature of the skin on the palm - very porous - and fleshy.

The porous nature of the skin enables the paste to penetrate deeply. Also, as we sweat from the palm, the henna paste may stay moist on the skin longer, which helps get a better finished color.

If you would like henna tattoo in the Greater Jacksonville Florida area, please call Spirit Vision Henna.

Tribal Henna Patterns for Men

Here is an example of a free hand / free spirit henna tattoo for a man.  Yes, men can get henna tattoo as well!

The same rules apply, you get the best color on the back of the hand,   and inner wrist... places where men feel most comfortable placing their henna tattoo.

It is possible to do henna on the upper arm, to do tribal bands and Kanji tattoos there, however, the finished color will not be as dark and generally will not last as long as henna tattoo put on the hands.

This design is based in part on traditional North African designs.. and we just went from there. Shapes the client like were added.. and so you see, a powerful tribal style design.

Several layers of lemon sugar were applied. Perhaps I will be able to post a photo of the finished color, which appears about 48 hours after the paste is removed. At present, a new mix of henna paste is basking in the morning sun.

Henna tattoo will be offered in the ambient comfort of The Midnight Sun, 1055 Park  Street, Jacksonville, Florida after  2PM this Saturday. Call now to reserve your seat!

Henna Tattoo at The Midnight Sun • Saturday April 17, 2010

Stop by the shop Noon thirty-ish this Saturday for henna tattoo by Ann George.

Pictured in this blog is a photo of an African tribal style henna which shows henna paste on the back of the hand, and paste and finished color on the inner wrist... notice the inner wrist tattoo is outlined again with henna paste.

Henna can last one week or more, depending on where you put the tattoo, how long you leave the paste on the skin, and other factors.

The Sankofa pattern on the wrist had faded a bit, so we outlined the original design with fresh henna paste to give a two-toned effect.

Once the henna paste is scraped off the skin, the bird will have a darker outline and an inner color.

Please know that all henna pastes are different. At the Midnight Sun you will get an informed consent to sign before you have your henna tattoo. This will tell you all the ingredients in the paste ( made fresh by Ann George! ), as well as how to take care of your body art.

An Spirit Vision, we do not use black henna, and make every effort to ensure that you have a traditional henna experience. Of course there are other artists in town, so please remember that each will have their own paste, pattern sets and aftercare instructions.

Tribal Henna Tattoo for the Hand

tribal henna tattoo - original henna patternHere is a tribal henna tattoo for the back of the hand. This design uses components common in many North African patterns.

In keeping with the "less is more" philosophy of life, I tried to accent the natural beauty of my clients hand using a pattern that drew the eye, but did not over whelm. Also, if you notice, the henna pattern avoids the joints of the fingers, and is "out of the way" so that a busy day can easily be accomplished.

If you do choose to get henna on the back of the hand, and want to get the darkest stain possible, then please try to leave the paste in place until you to to bed that night.

That evening, after you remove the dried paste with olive oil, sleeping in a glove (plastic or otherwise) will help heat up the henna to give a dark result.

Tribal Henna Tattoos from Midnight Sun

henna tattoo tribal stylepattern by catherine cartwright-jonestribal henna tattoo

Here are three little photos of tribal style henna tattoo people ordered at the Midnight Sun on Saturday June 7, 2008. The henna patterns for the back of the hands are derived from traditional components from African patterns.

The bold snake & bird tattoo is a favorite of one of my favorite customers! This pattern is made possible for her by the generosity of Catherine Cartwright-Jones who has published so many patterns for henna artists to use! Just click the little photos for a larger view.

Kanji Henna Tattoo for Men

henna tattoo for men kanji henna

Many thanks for this finished color photo of a Kanji henna tattoo on the wrist. Kanji is an excellent choice for men as it presents a tribal look and brings the advantage of a personal or spiritual meaning.

While Kanji is often applied to the upper arm, I find it best to put spiritually significant Kanji over the pulse point on the wrist. For those of you new to pulse point therapy, the idea is to put power symbols over areas where the blood is close to the surface of the body, and where the pulse is easily felt. The purpose is that when the blood passes under the image it is blessed by, or attuned to the meaning of the symbol.

This particular design had a personal meaning created by the combination of two symbols. I bring a small book of Kanji with me to every party or event, and you are welcome to choose one, or to bring your own. Please be sure to visit the "New American Tribal" tattoo gallery on line at Spirit Vision Henna for more ideas.

"Chef's Choice" Henna Tattoo

Sometimes, after looking through all the pattern books I bring to Midnight Sun, clients find a style they like, but want a custom tattoo. Hence, the Chef's Choice" option you see to the left.

I am noticing a new style of henna evolving in my work. It seems to be a personalized abstract artwork that I am calling New American Tribal for lack of another name.

The Tribal Tattoo section of my henna site features a photo gallery of more designs in that style if you care to visit.

Weather permitting - in that it is warm and not pouring rain - I will be back at Midnight Sun this coming Saturday. Last Saturday we had a good time, and I was very busy, so I may arrive a bit earlier, perhaps Noon. See you there?

Henna Tattoo FAQ

Mehndi, or henna tattoo, is a natural form of temporary body decoration. Henna Tattoo will always be some shade of reddish brown. The finished color depends on your skin type & how long you let the paste stay on your skin. The longer the paste remains the deeper the finished color. Your design will darken over the first 48 hours.

To prepare your skin for Mehndi, please wash the skin surface to remove any oils, lotions and dry skin. Mehndi works best on the palm of the hands, the feet & the tender skin of the inner arm. Designs on the back of the hands, arms, or other parts of the body do not last as long, nor does the color take as well. After your design is completed, a glaze of lemon-sugar may be applied at regular intervals to secure the paste to the skin and enhance the final color.

Please try to leave the paste in place for at least three hours. For best results leave the paste in place for 6 hours, or overnight. To remove, scrape the hardened paste off the skin. Use a vegetable oil to remove any remaining paste before washing the design.

Aftercare: If possible, avoid wetting the design area for at least 12 hours. Moisturizing the design twice daily with a vegetable oil will help make the design last. The design can remain visible on the skin for one to 3 weeks. This is a photo of henna paste On the skin. The finished color will be a shade of red to reddish brown.

Tribal Tattoo - Spirit Tribe Healing Tattoo

Here's a Sprit Tribe pattern. The pupose was to facilitate healing, balance, a return to ground.

Archtypal energies from Spain & Scotland came to play in the creation of this tattoo.

Of course I have just finished printing up new books full of traditional henna tattoo as well as some nice "Anywhere Designs" if you are not having a tribal moment when you stop by Midnight Sun

Be sure to visit Spirit Vision Henna to see the updated "henna movie"

Tribal Tattoo - free hand Spirit Tribe tattoo

Here is a "Spirit Tribe" tattoo. It happens when henna sort of finds the tribal nature of a client. In this case the client's nature was powerful, bold & passionate.

Done in the "Chef's Choice" tradition of seeing what the artist gives you, this design was created for the inner forearm.

Next post will be another Spirit Tribe pattern, this one with a healing intent.

Henna Dragon Tattoo

Here is a wrist tattoo that became a wrap around dragon. We weren't sure quite how the dragon would go... but as always seems to happen, henna has a way of finding the natural patterns in a person. This tattoo is one example. Click the image for a full sized photo.

If you want henna, remember, Spirit Vision Henna is avilable Saturday afternoons, or by appoitment for parties of all kinds.

Geometric Henna Pattern for Toes

Here is a pretty geometirc henna pattern for toes. It is done with Jamila Henna using the recipe methods posted earlier in the blog.

There is a sweet little embellishment for one heel that is not picutred today, I will have to put it online soon.

Of course, if you are coming to Midnight Sun for henna toes.. it may be best to go barefoot for the rest of the day, or to wear the tiniest flip flops possible.

Getting Darkest Henna Stains

Here is the Kanji symbol for honor, embellished with a tribal design. Do you see it hidden there?

This design was applied to the back of the upper arm, which is often a very difficult place to get a dark color.

Click the title of this post for helpful hints about things you can do to get the deepest henna stain from the "Goddess of Henna", Catherine Cartwright-Jones.

I follow many of her suggestions, and always try to make the best paste possible so that you will get the best henna tattoo every time.

When you come for your tattoo at Midnight Sun, I will give you a little paper to read & sign. Many helpful hints about how to get the best color are included on that paper.. so please have a read.
(Please note: this is a photo of the henna paste still on the skin! This raised black paste is scrapped of to reveal the finished tattoo).

Power Symbol Henna Tattoos

Here is Terri's power symbol henna tattoo from Midnight Sun. She chose a design that we found online & customized it by adding her own symbol at the top.

She chose to have this design on her inner wrist, and we sealed it with a surgical paper tape so that she could get the longest wear & the darkest color.

So it's not necessary to have a full hand design to enjoy the beauty of henna tattoo. Stay "tuned" for the next design on line. Hope to see you soon.

Simple Ankle Tattoo Pattern - Henna Tattoo Jacksonville

Here is a simple ankle tattoo. I did this design using a wide flow of paste so that the client would get good color.

It is important to ask your clients if they are wearing body lotion.. or sun tan oil.. before you start a design. These products can interfere with the final result. I hope you enjoy this photo. Visit my website for more information, or stop by the shop on Saturdays.

Wishing you joy,

Ann George
