follow livvy

my youngest 12 6th grade is in track for the first time she wants to distinguish herself from her brother 3 years older established athlete he ran the mile and the 800 at this age she likes to run distance so in practice she runs with the distance runners but planned to run the 400 different different different from her big brother coaches convinced her to run the mile oh she's been fretting its so far (she runs 2 to 3 miles in practice but not competitively) everyone is so fast (implying she is slow) the fourth lap hurts (but she's never quit) and she doesn't know how to pace herself coaches tell her "run with livvy" coaches tell her "stick with livvy until the 4th lap then just run as fast as you can" livvy is an 8th grader oh so much experience in those 2 years every practice my youngest sticks with livvy runs everything that livvy runs tries to feel the rhythm of a pace learning is she fast or slow is she almost out or is there a kick left my child hears "stick with livvy" and in practice livvy is going to run 2 miles so my child is going to run 2 miles a simple pace a little slower softer footsteps first and second lap third and fourth the mile has past this is all endurance now the fifth lap the sixth the start of the seventh livvy has to stop she has to throw up so my child stops rubs livvy's back "stick with livvy" the coaches said after a bit livvy is ok again ready to run the end of the seventh and then the eighth they are done 2 miles "stick with livvy" and she did when most wouldn't have in her first track meet she sticks with livvy a small pack of 4 livvy as 1 3 "stick with livvy's" alongside work as a team trading the lead spot pacing rhythm soft light steps long strides and stretches separating further and further from those who run this mile alone until the fourth lap the smell of the yellow tape ahead of them and livvy pulls ahead but the other three stretch and wonder until all cross the finish line 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th one place for each lap and my child has 2nd (1st for her age group) and its her brother who claps smiles cheers this is her moment her achievement convinced and cheered and championed along she runs with the distance runners because she is a distance runner one mile 7 minutes 3 seconds
