Henna Tattoo for the Back

Here is a photo of a henna tattoo on the back. This is a photo of the henna paste on the skin. The impact of the black paste on the white skin is quite striking. However, it is not advised to put henna on the back.

There are several reasons for this, and the primary reason is that the finished color will not be as dark as henna on the hands, arms, feet or legs. In fact, I do not recommend that you put henna on your back unless you are willing to go to extra effort to ensure good color.

Every ones skin type is different, and some people may get a good result for a henna tattoo on the back with aftercare. It is much more likely that I will get a complaint from a client that henna tattoo on the upper back is not very dark. There is very little I can to to correct this.

For most people, the pores of the back are small, the upper back may be oily in nature and these factors inhibit the henna from deeply penetrating the skin. It is also quite easy to smudge the henna when driving home!

Here is a photo of the Phoenix Tattoo 48 hours later. As you can see, my client went the extra mile to get a good finished color.

As henna is a heat activated dye, applications of olive oil and sunshine ( or perhaps a tanning bed ) gave the henna the extra push necessary to get dark color on the back in this air-conditioned Western world.

If you click to enlarge the photo, you will see that the darkest color is in the lower back. Sometimes it is possible to get a good finished color on the lower back... especially for women.

This pattern was a special order for a special occasion, and extra time was spent to keep the henna wet on the skin as long as possible ( lemon sugar glaze with essential oils was applied regularly over a two hour period to help the henna penetrate the skin.)

I do not offer this kind of henna at the Midnight Sun. The fee for this size and quality of work is $85 an hour. There may be some artists who are able to get a better color than I for the back. If you are out there.. please leave a comment on the blog so others can find you.

Or... feel welcome to post a tip to help us all get darker results on the back.  With all best wishes,

Ann George - Henna Artist - Spirit Vision Henna in Jacksonville, Florida

Contemporary Henna Pattern - for the active woman

Here is a photo of a henna tattoo (paste is on the skin - not black henna) for the active woman.

You will see that there is a lacy henna pattern on the palm, rather whimsical, yet incorporating traditional components.

However, the fingers and thumbs are free of henna paste, so work can continue for the three to six hours necessary to get the darkest henna color.

The palm will always show the true beauty of henna.. yielding colors ranging from rose, to red.. and in some cases, with good aftercare, black cherry red.

To ensure the darkest color, leave the paste on the skin as long as possible. It is also good to enjoy the outdoors! Heat is good for henna, water is not.

If you want your henna color to last as long as possible, no matter where you put it... the once you remove the paste, cover the design with olive oil to seal in the color & some body heat.

If you must wash anything.. please remember .. a bit of olive oil over the henna tattoo keeps water out and color in. For more information on the henna tattoo process, visit the FAQ page on my site.

Full Palm Henna Tattoo - Traditional Henna Design

Here is a photo of a full palm henna tattoo. Henna always gives the reddest, richest, darkest stain on the palms of the hands.

It is traditional to put henna on the palms. If you have never had the experience, a soothing relaxing, aromatherapy moment.. please consider bringing a driver with you for a traditional henna tattoo.

It is pampering in the extreme... and the gorgeous henna tattoo left once the paste is removed is quite exotic, and exciting. This is a photo of henna paste on the skin.

Under this black paste, henna, a heat-activated body dye, is penetrating layers of the skin. The longer you leave the paste on, and the hotter you get.. the darker the finished color.

There are all sorts of aftercare tricks to give you the deepest possible stain.. but most folks choose a simple henna.. and thus it is not as important to push for dark color.

Bridal henna is another matter... but you may visit other posts on this blog to learn more about that. If you are interested in henna tattoo, either for yourself, a party, wedding, gallery opening or other event, please feel welcome to call Ann George at Spirit Vision Henna.

Bridal Style Henna Tattoo - Full Back Hand Henna Pattern

Here is a photo of bridal style henna tattoo. This is a full back hand henna pattern that took about half an hour to finish.

The design actually started above the wrist with the floral cuff, then moved down to the back of the hand, and finally to the fingers.

From this angle, it is easy to see the peacock built into the pattern, so the wearer gets to enjoy the lovely bird.

The viewer will notice the floral cuff first, and then the eye will be drawn down the hand to the tip of the fingers.

This pattern was created by drawing a series of shapes that were then outlined and finally filled in with traditional mehndi components to give a full hand tattoo.

The use of negative space is very important when creating free hand henna designs. A bit of space between design elements catches the eye.

In my experience, when I forget to use negative space, my tattoos seem cluttered, visually busy, or it's just plain hard to see what I drew. I hope you find this little note helpful.

For more information about drawing henna tattoo, there are wonderful live videos on this blog. Check the labels to the right of this post to find one you like. Namaste.

Henna Tattoo at The Midnight Sun • Saturday April 17, 2010

Stop by the shop Noon thirty-ish this Saturday for henna tattoo by Ann George.

Pictured in this blog is a photo of an African tribal style henna which shows henna paste on the back of the hand, and paste and finished color on the inner wrist... notice the inner wrist tattoo is outlined again with henna paste.

Henna can last one week or more, depending on where you put the tattoo, how long you leave the paste on the skin, and other factors.

The Sankofa pattern on the wrist had faded a bit, so we outlined the original design with fresh henna paste to give a two-toned effect.

Once the henna paste is scraped off the skin, the bird will have a darker outline and an inner color.

Please know that all henna pastes are different. At the Midnight Sun you will get an informed consent to sign before you have your henna tattoo. This will tell you all the ingredients in the paste ( made fresh by Ann George! ), as well as how to take care of your body art.

An Spirit Vision, we do not use black henna, and make every effort to ensure that you have a traditional henna experience. Of course there are other artists in town, so please remember that each will have their own paste, pattern sets and aftercare instructions.

Henna Tattoo Design - When Is a Free Hand Pattern "Finished"?

Here is a  photo of a henna tattoo for the arm. The pattern is from the wonderful "Sangeet" pattern book available from Tap Dancing Lizard, and the henna by Ann George of Spirit Vision Henna.

This pattern took only a few minutes to do, as the paste was very moist, also fragrant, and easy to apply using a henna cone.

You will notice the design is eye-catching because both light & heavy lines were used to create the pattern.

This henna tattoo also make use of the shading technique to fill in the petals of the flowers. However, it just didn't feel quite finished.

Now, please notice this second photo:
You will see that by adding just a few lines at the top of the leaf shaped element on this pattern, the design "comes together" and has a very nice finished look.

Sometimes just a few strokes are sufficient to complete a pattern. For those of you new to henna tattoo, these images are photos of the henna paste on the skin, and not black henna tattoo.

Ann George hand blends here paste fresh for every event, and only pure, natural ingredients are used. If you do have allergies to Indian foods or essential oils, please send a note before coming for your henna tattoo appointment.

Traditional Henna Tattoo - Great Art in 20 minutes!

traditional henna tattoo design
Here is another photo of henna tattoo. This pattern was done at The Midnight Sun in about 20 minutes. This is a free hand pattern, or a "Chef's Choice" henna tattoo.

Art like this takes about 20 minute to complete. If you choose to have a spritz of the lemon sugar glaze applied to secure the henna paste to the skin, you may want to wait an additional 10 minutes for the henna paste to dry a bit before the glaze goes on.

Henna tattoo is a heat activated art form. As temperatures in Jacksonville Florida become cooler.. henna will no longer be offered on a walk-in basis at the Midnight Sun.

Henna gives the best finished color in the summer time because the weather is warmer, we tend to sweat.. thus the pores open & the henna paste can penetrate the skin.

Also, when we are sweating, our perspiration  helps the paste stay moist on the skin.. and this also helps to get a good finished color.

Henna parties are still a good way to experience henna during the cooler months. For more information about henna parties, please contact Ann George Studios, Inc. via the Spirit Vision Henna website.

Bridal Henna Tattoo for the Back of the Hand.

Here is a photo of a traditional henna tattoo pattern for the back of the hand.  The fine lines and full pattern are typical of a traditional henna tattoo pattern from India.

Many customers also order this as a "bridal" henna pattern, although this tattoo does not go all the way to the elbow as is the custom for many brides.

I used  henna paste made with finely ground Jamila henna powder, the 2009 crop, which made the paste flow easily from the hand rolled cone.  This year's crop of Jamila henna is wondefully "gummy" and make a very workable paste.

I have learned to make a more liquid paste and to roll a more narrow henna cone to give better control over the flow of the henna.

I think this pattern took about 20 minutes from start to finish. A glaze of lemon sugar was applied to help give good color, and to keep the paste on the skin as long as possible.

Spirit Vision Henna is still offering henna tattoo on Saturday afternoons at The Midnight Sun, 1055 Park Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32204. Be sure to stop by to sell all the new products just in !! The container is cleared customs!
