Gilded Henna Tattoo - The Peacock in Turquoise

I feel very happy with this tattoo design. I used the "sketching" technique I learned from the fabulous video previously posted to draw out the main components for this pattern.

I remembered to outline the primary design as soon as I drew it so that I would not be dazzled by the detail & forget to create the white space in process. You will see that the gilded nicely fills those "white space" areas in this photo.

If you want a closer look, just click the photo for more details. My client was very happy with her pattern, and enjoyed the process of watching the sketched outline be filled in with various traditional henna components.

I started the pattern fartest from the finger tips & worked my way down the hand. If you look, you can see that the paisley, floral component & peacock head stand out in this pattern as they are surrounded by space.

Now.. for all or you experienced artists, I am sure these tips are not news at all. I am however, spatially dyslexic & needed this kind of obvious "how to" to progress in the art form.

2008 Jamila Henna • Finished Color on Back of Hand

Here is a photo of the results of Jamila Henna 36 hours after the paste was removed. I feel good this wonderful dark reddish brown stain.

Please bear in mind that this is a photo of finished henna on 52 year old skin... and henna on the hand of a skinny woman at that! I am sure lovely, young skin will give a much better finished color than this. For those who are new to henna tattoo, here are a few tips you might want to know if you want to get good rich color for your finished tattoo.

First, the warmer you are, the more your pores open and the deeper the henna can penetrate the skin, so summer weather is good for henna.
Second, henna works best when the paste reamains wet. To keep your paste from drying too quickly, you can either continue to apply lemon sugar to your tattoo to keep the paste active as long as possible.. or you can have the pattern "wrapped" to go.
Third, the longer the paste stays on the skin, the darker the finished color.
Finally, if you moisturize the design area with olive oil, or another vegetable oil, you will get a darker tattoo than those who do not moisturize.

Some clients blow dry their finished tattoos after the paste is removed to help get a darker stain. ( Many people report good results with this method.)

Jamila Henna Powder • Rich Dark Color

Here is a bold pattern for the palm of the hand. This dark color is achieved with the last of the '07 Jamila Henna.
I used lemon juice, henna tea & jamila henna to start the paste.

After about 4 hours I added cajeput, neroli, lavendar and a bit of pomegranate juice to the mixture. I made a fairly liquid paste and used a medium tip mylar cone to achieve this design.

I did wrap the henna in tissue and wear a thin plastic glove overnight to get the darkest color possible. Of course, the color will be even darker tomorrow.. but I had a moment to put this photo up for you today.

I will have new photos online next week showing the finished color achieved with the 2008 harvest of Jamila henna which is just now for sale at Spirit Vision Henna.

Moroccan henna in Morocco mehndi body art tattoos

I learned so much about mixing a good paste from this video. Now, my henna is much more liquid, is easier to apply quickly, and give a deeper color as it dries more slowly. Thanks to this fine artist, my work is much improved.

Essential Oils for Henna - What oils are safe to ship by Mail?

I will not be offering a new henna kit this year. As I will now ship only by US Mail, most of the good terps can't go by mail. Although the quantities of oils shipped in a kit are quite small, I feel it is better to be safe than sorry.

Here is a link to very helpful information about essential oils and their shipping status from Camden Grey.

Oils that can ship by mail under certain circumstances:

• Lavindin Grosso: Flashpoint 151°F
• Geranium: Flashpoint 185°F
• Neroli: Flashpoint 154°F
• Clove Bud: Flashpoint 212°F

Oils that cannot ship by mail according to the professionals at Camden Grey include:

All these oils have been shipped to me via ground transportation carriers like UPS, DHS and Fed EX so I have plenty on hand for henna here in town.

My most successful henna blends do include Tea Tree, Lavender & Clove. Another good blend however is Geranium, Neroli & Clove. While I have seen numerous cautions about the use of Clove Oil in henna blends, it is my experience that a drop or two has not caused any problems to date.

I do offer all my clients an informed consent to sign that lists all ingredients used in their henna paste, and only one person in 5 years has been unable to get a tattoo because of a known allergy to cloves.

I hope you find this information helpful. I did! I may choose to change my shipping plans to make a weekly trip to the UPS store to ship henna kits by ground transportation. I will also do some more investigation to see if there are exceptions to shipping these oils by volume. (I hope so.)

Bridal Henna - Recipe for dark henna color

As promised, here is a photo of the finished color, 24 hours after the paste is removed. This color will continue to darken over the next 24 to 48 hours. While it may appear that this is black henna, I assure you, no black henna was used.

I use only fresh Jamila Henna powder, which gives very good, dark color very quickly. This paste was made with lemon juice, lime juice, my henna tea blend and henna powder. After allowing the paste to rest for 12 hours, I added tea tree oil, lavender oil, neroil oil, geranium bourbon oil & a bit of eucalyptus oil.

To futher thin the paste, I added a bit of pomegranate juice. After the henna paste had dried on the skin, I sprayed it with a mixture of lemon juice, sugar & lavender oils all mixed together in a fine mist sprayer. I waited for the paste to be pretty dry on the skin before spraying with the lemon juice. I was able to spray the finished design serveral times.

To be sure I got the best color possible, I wrapped the design with tissue, and wore a plastice glove (the kind you might get for food service use) for several hours. Come back to visit again for more tips as I "discover" them.

Quick Henna for the Back of the Hands

I have a new tip, which is probably not news to more expericenced artists, but you may find it helpful.
I have some henna powder, that while still good, is not super fresh... so I decided to put it in a mortar & pestle & grind it a bit more. (This powder is already super fine, so the pulverizing was not to improve the texture, rather to see if the grinding would help the powder release it's dye.)

The result (which surprised me) was that the newly ground henna (from Pakistan) suddenly behaved like Yemini henna I had purchased in the past in that the henna had that gummy, yeasty quality when mixed as a paste.

Abstract Lotus Palm & Henna Tips

Here is a quick henna tattoo for the palm. It is possible to get henna on your palm & do all sorts of daily activities.. you just have to stay away from water for a while.

My new henna recipe seems to be the best yet. The recipe creates a paste that easily stays on the skin. Instead of adding fructose, (apparently I can't measure that correcty) I add a bit of pomegranet juice concentrate to the finished paste. This little bit of natural sugar seems to keep the henna on the skin nicely.

I also decided to put my lemon sugar glaze in a little spray bottle this year. This works great! Instead of dabbing little bits of lemon glaze on a design with a Q-Tip, I just give the finished pattern a qucik spritz. My clients love it!
